Gregory Porter may be instantly recognisable from his trademark deerstalker cap, but his sonorous, Grammy-winning voice speaks for itself. Born in California in 1971, Porter grew up in a musical household and began singing in church, where his mother was a pastor and his father a singer.
After an injury hindered his hopes to pursue American Football, Porter turned to his vocal talents and moved to New York City in 2004 to build a career. After performing local shows and earning himself a residency, in 2010 he released his debut Water. Porter's popularity rocketed from the underground jazz scene to the mainstream in 2013, when his third full-length Liquid Spirit – his first on Blue Note Records – won Best Jazz Vocal Album at the Grammy's. Three years later its follow-up, Take Me to the Alley, won the same award. In 2017 he released Nat "King" Cole & Me, a buttery smooth ode to one of his musical heroes.
In 2024, Porter announced an extensive UK tour for spring 2025 with Jo Harrop in support.
