About
NYC duo play hook-filled indie pop with an angular post punk edge
They might not be scientists, but the arrival of We Are Scientists’ über-catchy post-punk was so brilliantly timed that the whole thing might have been built in a lab and clinically trialled to perfection. Dropping Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt into a scene primed by Interpol, The Killers, Hot Hot Heat and Franz Ferdinand was like firing a packet of sausages into a room of ravenous dogs.
For all their angular New Yorkisms, We Are Scientists actually started off on the west coast where Keith Murray, Chris Cain and Michael Tapper met at college. The trio gravitated to New York and, after a slew of independent releases, signed to Virgin for their second album 2006’s With Love And Squalor. With a supreme knack for incessant hooks and a knowing sense of humour, the album caught on hugely in the UK and notched up three Top 40 singles: Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt, It’s A Hit and The Great Escape.
Michael Tapper left the band but Cain and Murray pressed ahead as a duo, releasing Brain Thrust Mastery in 2008. Again, it proved hugely successful in the UK. Drummer Andy Burrows (formerly of Razorlight) joined the band for 2010’s Barbara and remained in situ for 2014’s TV En Francais, which also featured Tim Wheeler from Ash. Helter Seltzer arrived in 2016, with Megaplex following two years later.
In June 2021, the band announced a new record, Huffy, set for an October 2022 release. It was preceded by a new single Contact High. We Are Scientists also announced UK tour dates for November and December 2021, including gigs in Liverpool, Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham and London.
